Our Appraisal Process

  1. Initial Examination: We begin with a detailed visual inspection to identify the item’s type, approximate age, place of origin, and overall condition, noting any damage, wear, or alterations.
  2. Authentication: Mint marks, hallmarks, maker’s marks, engravings, and design features are examined using microscopes and UV lighting. We reference catalogs, grading guides, and databases to confirm authenticity and detect reproductions or forgeries.
  3. Weighing & Measurement: Digital calipers and precision scales are used to verify dimensions and weight. For coins, this helps confirm metal content and authenticity. For jewelry, weight helps estimate precious metal value and contributes to fair market pricing.
  4. Material Testing: Coins, bullion, and jewelry are tested using acid kits, digital testers like Sigma Metalytics, and XRF analyzers to determine metal composition and purity. Gemstones are assessed using loupes, refractometers, diamond testers, and UV lights.
  5. Grading & Condition Analysis: Coins are approximately graded using the Sheldon Scale and compared to certified examples. Jewelry, watches, and antiques are assessed based on craftsmanship, preservation, and any signs of repair or modification.
  6. Microscopic Analysis: High-powered microscopes allow close inspection of surface features, signs of tampering, engraving details, and manufacturing techniques that assist in authentication and grading.
  7. Market Research: We use real-time metal prices, historical auction results, dealer networks, and pricing guides to determine an item’s fair market or replacement value.
  8. Gemological Evaluation: Our gem analysis includes verifying authenticity, detecting treatments, and estimating quality using professional gemological tools and reference standards.
  9. Reference Materials: We maintain access to PCGS/NGC grading guides, GIA standards, auction catalogs, and specialized databases to support accurate identification and valuation.
  10. Documentation: Upon request, we provide written appraisals with photographs and detailed descriptions for insurance, estate planning, resale, or legal purposes.
  11. Client Communication: We take time to explain our findings and are happy to answer follow-up questions or provide further documentation as needed.
